What to Look For in a Personal Injury Lawyer

If you are in need of legal representation, you want to get the best person suited for the job that can maximize your outcome. This is very true in divorce cases, which I talk about in a previous post here, and is also important when it comes to personal injury law.

Best Traits of a Personal Injury Attorney

A friend of mine is a Spartanburg Personal Injury Lawyer and I think that he best embodies the kinds of things that make someone good in this field. For one, the most important thing that he has is experience in this area of law.

Experience is something that cannot be understated. The more cases that someone has tried, the more they have been exposed to. There are no surprises, except in the very rare and unusual case. They have “been there, done that”, so to speak, and can take on your case with ease, knowing exactly what to argue and how to maneuver to bring the best outcome for their client.

Another thing that experience brings is connections. Someone who has been in the courtroom a long time, especially in the same jurisdiction, will come to know all the players in their area and developed a rapport that they can leverage. It is much easier to come to an amenable agreement when there is a familiarity between the parties. This can also help in knowing the weaknesses of the other party and where they are vulnerable.

Outside of knowing the other players in the courtroom, experience also brings familiarity with insurance companies and how they proceed on these kinds of matters. Insurance companies are notoriously stingy in paying out injury claims, and an experienced lawyer in the personal injury field will know what buttons to push to get the highest payout.

Along with experience, another important trait is the lawyer’s manner. How do they handle their clients? Are they attentive to their needs, answering all their questions and walking them through the process so everything is clear and understood? Some lawyers just see clients as another source of billable hours and fees and lack the compassion in their job. Find one that is caring and truly invested in your case.

On top of all that, they should have a track record of success. It doesn’t mean much if they have taken on many personal injury cases if they didn’t come out with good payouts or outcomes for their clients. After all, that’s what you hire a lawyer for in the first place – to win your case, and in personal injury, that means a good amount of money rewarded. If you’re interviewing a potential lawyer to represent you, check their case history and see how they have performed for prior clients so you know what to expect.

I think all of these traits are what makes someone great in this area of law and should always be sought out if you are in need of a legal representative for a case such as this. Don’t settle for anything less than the best!
